Broadcast South began in the fall of 2006, as radio stations WDMG AM/FM Douglas, WRDO FM/WBHB AM, Fitzgerald, and WKZZ, Tifton were purchased by Broadcast South from Black Crow of Daytona Beach, Fla. This purchase marked the first time WDMG had been under local ownership in many decades.
Broadcast South is owned by four Coffee County businesses or individuals. They are Kerry Van Moore, Waldron Enterprises, Nearly Famous Burger King and John Higgs. Higgs has served as Managing Partner for the radio group since its inception.
After the initial purchases in 2006, Broadcast South added on new stations to its group. In 2008, Broadcast South purchased WVOH AM/FM in Hazlehurst, Ga from John Hullett. In 2009, Broadcast South purchased WPNG, Pearson, from the Bae Broadcasting Group from Chicago. That station is now one of the most popular in the entire region and is called “Shine 101.9”.
In 2011, Broadcast South was able to increase the power of WVOH FM by moving the tower from its Hazlehurst location to Coffee County near the Bacon County line. The station’s wattage increased from 25,000 watts to 50,000 watts with this move. The new, larger station is now called 93.5 “The Eagle” and is licensed to Nicholls. Meanwhile, Broadcast South was able to purchase a station in McRae and move it to Hazlehurst. Shortly afterward, WHJD AM/FM was put on the air, and now serves the greater Jeff Davis County area.
